В сентябре 2015 года лидеры Китая и России подписали межправительственное соглашение об учреждении генконсульств во Владивостоке, Казани, Харбине и Ухане, три из них за это время были открыты.
Ожидается, что в округ генконсульства в Ухане войдут провинции Хубэй, Хунань, Гуйчжоу, Сычуань и город центрального подчинения Чунцин.
В настоящее время в Китае функционируют консульский отдел посольства России в Пекине, а также генконсульства РФ в Гонконге, Гуанчжоу (провинция Гуандун), Харбине (провинция Хэйлунцзян), Шанхае и Шэньяне (провинция Ляонин).
