Seemingly unremarkable, this industrial building erected in Shrewsbury, UK, in 1796-1797 to the designs of Charles Bage to function as a flax mill and later as maltings boasts at least two architectural features that make it an important landmark and a reason why it was listed as a Grade I building in January, 1953 and given a new life a couple of years ago following a complete overhaul.

The first prominent feature has to do with the material used for the outer walls. The thing is that the growing significance of bricks as a construction material as well as the ever-increasing expenditures of the crown to fund the war against American colonies prompted King George III to levy a new tax in 1784, the brick tax. Bricks were initially taxed at 2s 6d per thousand and the tax was increased in 1794 and 1797 to 4s and 5s, respectively. Brick manufacturers were swift in responding to this fiscal move by making bricks to a larger dimension. The flax mill building constructed of larger bricks is thus an example of this loophole, which was closed only in 1801 when the government limited the dimensions of a brick and doubled the tax on bricks that were larger.

As it’s time for a Friday night quiz, anyone willing is welcome to take a closer look at the building and guess the other remarkable feature of its architecture that made it an important precursor of modernism and earned the mill the Grade I listing.

Soloviev also promoted the channel in a post he shared on his own Telegram, which has 580,000 followers. The post recommended his viewers subscribe to "War on Fakes" in a time of fake news. The War on Fakes channel has repeatedly attempted to push conspiracies that footage from Ukraine is somehow being falsified. One post on the channel from February 24 claimed without evidence that a widely viewed photo of a Ukrainian woman injured in an airstrike in the city of Chuhuiv was doctored and that the woman was seen in a different photo days later without injuries. The post, which has over 600,000 views, also baselessly claimed that the woman's blood was actually makeup or grape juice. If you initiate a Secret Chat, however, then these communications are end-to-end encrypted and are tied to the device you are using. That means it’s less convenient to access them across multiple platforms, but you are at far less risk of snooping. Back in the day, Secret Chats received some praise from the EFF, but the fact that its standard system isn’t as secure earned it some criticism. If you’re looking for something that is considered more reliable by privacy advocates, then Signal is the EFF’s preferred platform, although that too is not without some caveats. Apparently upbeat developments in Russia's discussions with Ukraine helped at least temporarily send investors back into risk assets. Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko that there were "certain positive developments" occurring in the talks with Ukraine, according to a transcript of their meeting. Putin added that discussions were happening "almost on a daily basis." Given the pro-privacy stance of the platform, it’s taken as a given that it’ll be used for a number of reasons, not all of them good. And Telegram has been attached to a fair few scandals related to terrorism, sexual exploitation and crime. Back in 2015, Vox described Telegram as “ISIS’ app of choice,” saying that the platform’s real use is the ability to use channels to distribute material to large groups at once. Telegram has acted to remove public channels affiliated with terrorism, but Pavel Durov reiterated that he had no business snooping on private conversations.
