Владимир Любарский в июне 2023 года объявил, что отправится на войну России против Украины в составе батальона «Ахмат». Чтобы отправиться на фронт, Любарский оставил пост мэра столицы Карелии Петрозаводска, который занимал с мая 2021 года.
