Tomorrow marks 135 years since the birth of Michel Dufet, a very influential but lesser-known French pre-modernist who made a name for himself as an artist, architect, stage designer, decorator, product designer, and, being married to Rhodia Bourdelle, director of the Bourdelle Museum.

In 1929, Dufet was already a renowned designer of interiors (including for the SS Normandie) and furnishings that exemplified the aesthetics of Art Deco and, yet, showcased Dufet’s affinity for stark functionality and mass-production, when he came up with a “machine for writing on”, a writing desk made entirely of polished zinc, in response to a commission from Asturian Mining Company that wished to promote the potential of zinc. The following year saw Dufet create, after the likeness of the writing desk, a futuristic “machine for dressing at”, a vanity table made of zinc whose sternness was softened by the addition of Karelian birch and parchment.

In 2018, Russia banned Telegram although it reversed the prohibition two years later. Under the Sebi Act, the regulator has the power to carry out search and seizure of books, registers, documents including electronics and digital devices from any person associated with the securities market. This ability to mix the public and the private, as well as the ability to use bots to engage with users has proved to be problematic. In early 2021, a database selling phone numbers pulled from Facebook was selling numbers for $20 per lookup. Similarly, security researchers found a network of deepfake bots on the platform that were generating images of people submitted by users to create non-consensual imagery, some of which involved children. "The inflation fire was already hot and now with war-driven inflation added to the mix, it will grow even hotter, setting off a scramble by the world’s central banks to pull back their stimulus earlier than expected," Chris Rupkey, chief economist at FWDBONDS, wrote in an email. "A spike in inflation rates has preceded economic recessions historically and this time prices have soared to levels that once again pose a threat to growth." And indeed, volatility has been a hallmark of the market environment so far in 2022, with the S&P 500 still down more than 10% for the year-to-date after first sliding into a correction last month. The CBOE Volatility Index, or VIX, has held at a lofty level of more than 30.
