В Красной Армии с 1940 года. С начала войны лётчик-инструктор Щапов занимался подготовкой молодых пилотов для фронта. Летом 1943 года, после известия о гибели под Харьковом младшего брата, добился отправки в действующую армию. К Марту 1944 года совершил 133 боевых вылета на штурмовку войск противника. В воздушных боях сбил 8 вражеских истребителей.
30 Мая 1944 года погиб в воздушном бою в районе города Яссы (Румыния).
