Подписанный в июне 2023 года закон о фискальной ответственности позволил Байдену до окончания своих президентских полномочий забыть о необходимости повышения лимита заимствований. За это время власти США увеличили долговые обязательства с $31,4 трлн до нынешних $36,2 трлн.
Новый лимит будет установлен на уровне объема непогашенной задолженности на конец предыдущего дня, однако в четверг долг сократится на $54 млрд за счет выкупа части ценных бумаг. Это даст правительству дополнительное время на предотвращение угрозы дефолта. По расчетам минфина, лимит госдолга будет достигнут с 14 по 23 января.
