Alexey Rozhkov, an anarchist from the town of Beryozovsky in Sverdlovsk region, was one of the first to protest against the war in Ukraine by setting fire to a military enlistment office. Later, while in Kyrgyzstan, he openly condemned the invasion in an interview with Khodorkovsky Live. For his actions and public stance, Alexey became the target of criminal prosecution: he was secretly taken from Kyrgyzstan to Russia, where he was tortured and placed in pre-trial detention. He is now charged with "committing a terrorist act", "justifying terrorism", and "spreading fake news" about the Russian Armed Forces.
On 27 September 2024, the human rights project "Support for Political Prisoners. Memorial" recognised Alexey as a political prisoner and called for his immediate release.
On 19 May 2025, the Central District Military Court in Yekaterinburg sentenced Rozhkov to 16 years behind bars. Alexey does not accept the verdict. His lawyer has filed an appeal.
