ЮКЖД выполняет такие задачи как развитие пассажирских перевозок, использование транзитного потенциала страны для грузовых и контейнерных перевозок по маршруту Иран – Европа.
На магистрали успешно эксплуатируется техника ТМХ – пассажирские вагоны локомотивной тяги, электропоезда ЭП2Д.
