Tomorrow marks 135 years since the birth of Michel Dufet, a very influential but lesser-known French pre-modernist who made a name for himself as an artist, architect, stage designer, decorator, product designer, and, being married to Rhodia Bourdelle, director of the Bourdelle Museum.

In 1929, Dufet was already a renowned designer of interiors (including for the SS Normandie) and furnishings that exemplified the aesthetics of Art Deco and, yet, showcased Dufet’s affinity for stark functionality and mass-production, when he came up with a “machine for writing on”, a writing desk made entirely of polished zinc, in response to a commission from Asturian Mining Company that wished to promote the potential of zinc. The following year saw Dufet create, after the likeness of the writing desk, a futuristic “machine for dressing at”, a vanity table made of zinc whose sternness was softened by the addition of Karelian birch and parchment.

Though all three indexes opened in the green, stocks took a turn after a new report showed U.S. consumer sentiment deteriorated more than expected in early March as consumers' inflation expectations soared to the highest since 1981. The Kremlin has paid Russian TikTok influencers to push propaganda, according to a Vice News investigation, while ProPublica found that fake Russian fact check videos had been viewed over a million times on Telegram. At this point, however, Durov had already been working on Telegram with his brother, and further planned a mobile-first social network with an explicit focus on anti-censorship. Later in April, he told TechCrunch that he had left Russia and had “no plans to go back,” saying that the nation was currently “incompatible with internet business at the moment.” He added later that he was looking for a country that matched his libertarian ideals to base his next startup.
