Tomorrow marks 135 years since the birth of Michel Dufet, a very influential but lesser-known French pre-modernist who made a name for himself as an artist, architect, stage designer, decorator, product designer, and, being married to Rhodia Bourdelle, director of the Bourdelle Museum.

In 1929, Dufet was already a renowned designer of interiors (including for the SS Normandie) and furnishings that exemplified the aesthetics of Art Deco and, yet, showcased Dufet’s affinity for stark functionality and mass-production, when he came up with a “machine for writing on”, a writing desk made entirely of polished zinc, in response to a commission from Asturian Mining Company that wished to promote the potential of zinc. The following year saw Dufet create, after the likeness of the writing desk, a futuristic “machine for dressing at”, a vanity table made of zinc whose sternness was softened by the addition of Karelian birch and parchment.

This ability to mix the public and the private, as well as the ability to use bots to engage with users has proved to be problematic. In early 2021, a database selling phone numbers pulled from Facebook was selling numbers for $20 per lookup. Similarly, security researchers found a network of deepfake bots on the platform that were generating images of people submitted by users to create non-consensual imagery, some of which involved children. In February 2014, the Ukrainian people ousted pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych, prompting Russia to invade and annex the Crimean peninsula. By the start of April, Pavel Durov had given his notice, with TechCrunch saying at the time that the CEO had resisted pressure to suppress pages criticizing the Russian government. "We're seeing really dramatic moves, and it's all really tied to Ukraine right now, and in a secondary way, in terms of interest rates," Octavio Marenzi, CEO of Opimas, told Yahoo Finance Live on Thursday. "This war in Ukraine is going to give the Fed the ammunition, the cover that it needs, to not raise interest rates too quickly. And I think Jay Powell is a very tepid sort of inflation fighter and he's not going to do as much as he needs to do to get that under control. And this seems like an excuse to kick the can further down the road still and not do too much too soon." 'Wild West'
