За заслуги войск ПВО во время Великой Отечественной войны, а также за выполнение задач особой важности в мирное время указом ВС СССР от 20 февраля 1975 года в стране был учрежден новый государственный праздник – День войск ПВО, который отмечался 11 апреля. В 1980 году праздник был перенесен на второе воскресенье апреля.
